The Indian Maritime University was established through an Act of Parliament (Act 22) in November 2008 as a Central University to play a key role in the development of trained human resource for the maritime sector. The Indian Maritime University is headquartered at Chennai has campuses at Chennai, Mumbai, Kolkata, Visakhapatnam and Cochin. IMU presently offers Diploma, Degree, Postgraduate Diploma and Post Graduate Degree courses in Nautical Science, Marine Engineering, Naval Architecture & Ocean Engineering, Ship Building & Repair, Maritime Management, Doctoral Programmes and Post Sea Courses.

The Director General of Shipping has accredited University with A1 outstanding Grade for the past FOUR consecutive years for outstanding maritime education and training, which is a rare distinction.
