First International Conference on Coastal Communities and Marine Pollution
Register NowThe establishment of the Indian marine University as a Central University by an Act of Parliament (Act 22) in November 2008 is expected to have a substantial impact on the production of qualified workforce for the marine sector. Its six campuses are spread throughout the country in five port cities: Chennai, Kochi, Kolkata, Mumbai Port, Navi Mumbai, and Visakhapatnam, with its main administrative headquarters in Chennai. Under the Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways of the Indian Government, the University offers a diversified range of programmes in the maritime field for studies, research and training embedded into its four schools specialized in marine engineering, maritime management, naval architecture and ocean engineering and nautical science. It serves as India's primary institute for the education of merchant navy officers under the auspices of DG Shipping.
Our coastlines and oceans have deteriorated as a result of rapid industrialization that resulted in excessive production and consumption and the burgeoning maritime trade fueling the flames. The basic existence of all species on this planet, from microbial colonies to human settlements, is threatened by pollution of the oceanic environment. Ocean-related degradation first manifests itself around the coast before spreading inland. While a developing country's blue economy model seeks to improve human well-being and offers a significant chance to accelerate economic growth and address issues such as unemployment, food security, and poverty, the deterioration of the marine environment can have a negative impact on the achievement of these goals.
The International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL) was adopted by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) in 1973 and entered into force in 1983. The convention consists of six technical Annexes and is now geared at avoiding and minimising pollution from ships, both accidental contamination and that from normal operations. Most Annexes have Special Areas with severe restrictions on operating discharges. With 2023 being the 50th year of the MARPOL convention entering into force, the IMO has been making many attempts for ongoing changes, some of which are scheduled for 2024 also.
The first edition of the Indian Maritime University's International Conference on Coastal Communities and Marine Pollution (CCMARPOL )2024 has been mooted to provide a global forum to voice various issues leading to marine pollution, their dire consequences on the coastal communities and provide potential solutions to mitigate the issues.
This conference aims at bringing all the Engineers, Scientists, Academicians, Policy Makers, Lawyers, Seafarers, Mariners, Ports and Shipping Communities, Students and Environmental Bodies to a common platform for discussing, interacting, exchanging and disseminating the disastrous effects of marine pollution on coastal communities through plenary lectures, keynote addresses, paper presentations and panel discussions.
In addition, it seeks to integrate science and applications while putting a focus on marine pollution-related practical challenges. It is directed as much at the industry as at academia. CCMARPOL 2024 will highlight the diverse probable solutions by encouraging interdisciplinary approaches and techniques. All papers should attempt to bring theory to real-life applications. The technical program of CCMARPOL 2024 will consist of invited talks and oral presentations. It will consider full papers within the scope of the conference for review.
The conference will be hosted by the Indian Maritime University (IMU) at Coutyard by Marriort, Mumbai, India. The Indian Maritime University (IMU) is a central university under the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, in India. It deals with a wide range of topics related to the sea, ranging from oceanography to maritime law and history, and including practical topics such as search and rescue at sea and the transportation of dangerous goods. It is India's national institute for the training of Merchant navy Officers. It has six campuses in Chennai, Kochi, Kolkata, Mumbai Port, Navi Mumbai, and Visakhapatnam.
CCMARPOL 2024 invites papers on the following themes to address various aspects of marine pollution and improving the resilience of coastal communities. The topics include but are not limited to:
Accepted papers will be published in the Marine Engineers Review, the journal of the Institute of Marine Engineers (India).
