IMU signs MoU with Hindustan Shipyard Ltd., Visakhapatnam on 30th August 2024 towards enhancing innovative capabilities in Shipbuilding and for capacity building. The partnership will facilitate knowledge sharing and research collaborations leading to enhanced capacity and capabilities for both entities.

IMU Chennai recently hosted a forward-thinking webinar that captured the attention of both students and industry professionals. This event spotlighted two revolutionary technologies set to transform the maritime industry: Virtual Reality (VR) simulators for ship and bridge operations and Digital Twins for port infrastructure. A key moment of the webinar was the presentation by Olav-Rasmus Vorren, CEO of Morild Interaktiv, a global leader in maritime simulation technology. He demonstrated the capabilities of Morild Interaktiv's VR simulator systems, which are designed to train maritime professionals in critical areas like ship handling, bridge operations, and emergency protocols. These simulators offer an immersive 360-degree environment, allowing trainees to experience realistic scenarios, from navigating through challenging weather conditions to handling equipment failures, all in a risk-free setting. In addition to VR simulators, Olav-Rasmus also introduced the concept of Digital Twins, a revolutionary technology that involves creating digital replicas of physical assets, such as ports and infrastructure. These Digital Twins allow maritime professionals and engineers to monitor, simulate, and optimize operations in real time. By offering detailed insights into the performance and maintenance needs of port infrastructure, Digital Twins have the potential to streamline operations, enhance safety, and reduce costs, making them a game-changer for the maritime industry.

IMU enters into a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) with The Institute of Marine Engineers India for establishing a sponsorship of Rs. 18 Lakhs for two Junior Research Fellows (JRF) at IMU. Another feather in the cap for IMU. The MoA was signed and exchanged during the Alumni Industry Meet 2.0 by the Vice Chancellor of IMU Dr. Malini V Shankar and President of IME(I) Mr. Rajeev Nayyer.

IMU signs MoU with RK Mehrotra Holding Pvt. Ltd. a subsidiary of the Foresight Group company, founded by the Alumnus of IMU (DMET Kolkata), Dr. Ravi K Mehrotra of the 1960 batch, for the establishment for the Dr. Ravi L Mehrotra Centre of Excellence in Maritime at IMU's Kolkata Campus. The MoU provides for USD 1.5 Million for research activities through an endowment portfolio and USD 0.72 Million for the building and infrastructure of this Centre. This is proud moment for IMU to witness the generous support from its Alumnus.

The Indian Maritime University (IMU) and IIITDM – Kancheepuram (IIITDM-K) have signed an MoU on 29.07.2024, towards Academic Collaboration leading to offering of joint courses, joint research, undertaking training on emerging technologies. With this MoU, IMU and IIITDM K would leverage on the expertise of the other partner Institution. The partnership with IIITDM-K will see the delivery of joint certificate courses in Maritime Informatics, Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning.

“SWACHHATA YODHHA” has been awarded to IMU Navi Mumbai Campus by Municipal Commissioner, Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) on 11.03.2024 in lieu of participation in various cleanliness drive conducted in the year 2023 by NMMC. Moreover, NMMC also achieved an impressive feat by securing the second position among India’s cleanest cities in the esteemed SWACHH SURVEKSHAN 2023. 30 cadets from IMU Navi Mumbai Campus, accompanied by an Instructor and Admin Staff, participated in the programme.

Dr. Kalyan Mitra, who, till recently was a Faculty at IMU-KC, received an Omkarnath and Chuni Wazir outstanding teaching Award from the Institute of Marine Engineers (India) for excellence in education. This award was instituted to judge the Teacher in DG Shipping recognized MTI's. It was awarded by the Institute of Marine Engineers. Dr MK Dasgupta , Dr KM Pattanaik and Shri Toorban Mitra Faculty from IMU's Kolkata Campus, awarded the Silver Medal (2nd Prize) for their Paper titled "Logistics Performance as Facilitator to Trade Performance: an Indian Perspective", Maritime Logistics Conference (MARLOG 13) organised by Arab Academy for Science, Technology and Maritime Transport at Alexandria from 03 - 05 March 2024. In all, 48 Papers were presented in the conference. Dr. MK Dasgupta presented the Paper on behalf of his Team.

IMU hosted the first Advisory Committee meeting of the IMU Centre for Policy Research in Maritime Studies (CPRiMeS). Indian Maritime University: Global academic engagements (MoUs) Indian Maritime University (IMU) the largest maritime University having the oldest maritime training institutions in its fold participates in the Global Maritime India Summit held from 17th to 19th October 2023 in Mumbai. Saravanan, attended the International Maritime Education Conference held at Dalian Maritime University between 21st and 25th September, 2023, in Dalian, China, and spoke on the topic: Chances and Challenges of New Technology to Maritime Education in Asia and the Pacific Area: An Indian Perspective. He emphasised the learning of holistic and Interdisciplinary and Multidisciplinary education, thrust in innovation and entrepreneurship at Higher Education levels. He emphasised further the imperative to stay relevant under the new age of IR 4.0, global environmental concerns, and the dialogue shift towards the blue economy. He elaborated on a few key elements of Maritime Education Training (MET) from the Indian perspective that IMU intends to bring changes to. Dr. Rajoo Balaji has been appointed as Pro Vice Chancellor at Indian Maritime University. Dr. Balaji, DMET 76-80 batch, Chief Engineer, gradually turned to academics with a Masters in Maritime Management and a Doctoral degree in Mechanical Engineering/Maritime Technology (UTM, Malaysia) with a modest collection of indexed / cited publications to his credit. He has also been an Editor of the magazine 'Marine Engineers' Review read across the maritime industry.

Dr. Sheeja Janardhanan was the organizer of special session (SS)11 on "Advanced Scientific Visualization for Multidisciplinary Engineering" during the 16th International Conference on Advanced Computational Engineering and Experimenting (ACEX) held during 3-7 July 2023 in Crete, Greece. She was the keynote speaker of the session and also a member of the scientific committee of the conference since 2017. She played the role of Opening Speaker of SS11 during ACEX 2023 edition. ShipTek International Conference and Awards 2023, India chapter was conducted on 25th May 2023 at Grand Hyatt Kochi. It was the 18th Edition of the ShipTek International Maritime Awards focusing on 'The Marine Offshore Oil and Gas'. Dr Deepak Mishra of Indian Maritime University, Kolkata Campus, was one of the eminent speakers at the event. He gave a presentation on the 'Application of HVDC Cables in Decarbonisation'.

Dr. Manu Korulla, Director, Directorate of Management Services, DRDO, formerly Scientist G and Director Technology, NSTL, DRDO interacted with the students of SNAOE on 20th May 2023. He deliberated on the qualities of a Naval Architect in the true spirit. His address was followed by thought provoking interactions with students. Dr. Korulla was accompanied by Dr. Bharadwaja Srinivasa Ayyangar. Scientist F, NSTL, DRDO and Shri. Ali Sagar Calcuttawala, Co-founder. Saif Seas. An eminent DRDO scientist, a distinguished panel member of the Naval Research Board and a fine Naval Architect, Dr. Ayyangar encouraged the students to become members in the Institution of Naval Architects (INA), visakhapatnam Chapter. He also brought to light the benefits of INA membership. Shri. Ali Sagar Calcuttawala is well known for his self propelled vessel models. He demonstrated the working of a self-propelled trimaran life buoy model to the students.

A talk was organized about Maritime Cyber Security for all the students' company of the University. All campuses were connected online and there was enthusiastic participation from Students, Faculty and Staff. Our Vice Chancellor, Registrar, Controller of Examinations, Dean, Campus Directors and Officials attended the lecture talk. Further to the Lecture, talks were held for exploring possible collaborations.

Dr. Yogamala.H.L Assistant Professor, IMU Kochi Campus has been Pre-selected as the National Legal Consultant for India under the IMO’ GloLitter Partnerships Project with 30 other International Strategic Partners. The GloLitter Partnerships Project (GloLitter) is implemented by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), with initial funding from the Government of Norway via the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (Norad). GloLitter is supporting 30 developing countries in reducing sea-based marine plastic litter (SBMPL) from the maritime transport and fisheries sectors, to reverse the negative environmental impacts of plastic discard and loss. The project strengthens government and port management institutional capacities in addressing marine plastic litter issues (MPL) and supports legal, policy and institutional reforms at the country level.
