The birth of Indian Maritime University is a long cherished dream of the maritime community of India.
The Indian Maritime University came into being through an Act of Parliament (Act 22) on 14th November 2008 as a Central University and is poised to play a key role in the development of trained human resource for the maritime sector. 14th November is celebrated as 'IMU Day' every year.
The following are the objectives of the University:
(i) To facilitate and promote maritime studies, training, research and extension work with focus on emerging areas of studies like oceanography, maritime history, maritime laws, maritime security, search and rescue, transportation of dangerous cargo, environmental studies and other related fields, and also to achieve excellence in these and connected fields and other matters connected therewith or incidental thereto.
With an aim to discuss and deliberate ideas and innovations that can propel India's blue economy, a three-day 'Chintan Baithak' was organised between 26th-28th June 2022 by the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways (MoPSW), at Madikere.
In commemoration of World Environment Day, the School of Marine Engineering & Technology, IMU CC, in collaboration with the Mahatma Gandhi National Council of Rural Education, organized a sapling planting activity -"Reinforcing Greenery on Campus" on 02.06.2022.
The School of Marine Engineering and Technology (SMET), IMU Chennai Campus hosted a 'COLLOQUIUM' a two-hour interview event organized by the official college magazine of SMET, IMU Chennai campus - 'Purple Stripes' with the distinguished guest Shri CV Subbarao, Managing Director, Sanmar Shipping, in the headquarters campus of Indian Maritime University, Chennai.

Cadets from IMU Chennai Campus has participated in the KNOTS-22 event organized by the Department of Naval Architecture & Offshore Engineering, AMET University and secured prizes in various events.
Hon'ble Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways and AYUSH Shri. Sarbananda Sonowal conducted a meeting through Video Conference on 26.05.2022 on the points - Preparedness & action plan of ports for International Yoga Day, Regular Training of Ports Officials and Asset Monetization pipeline. Shri. K. Saravanan, Registrar, IMU along with Dr. Rajoo Balaji, Director, IMU-CC from IMU attended the meeting.
Dr. Sheeja Janardhanan, Associate Professor, IMU-Vizag presentation has been selected for the Circular Campus Award under Faculty Development Initiatives Category at the ACE Awards (Awards in Circular Economy) by India Circular Economy Forum (ICEF). Vice Chancellor, IMU has congratulated on the award and wished more encomiums in the future.
HIMT college (Affiliated Institute of IMU) announced the Inauguration of India’s first Student Chapter of IME (I) & Passing out ceremony of B.Sc, B.Tech, GP & ETO Trainees. Dr. Malini V.
